St. Augustine School has used Accelerated Reader, an important independent reading comprehension program, for a number of years. Each book on the accelerated reader test list is worth a certain number of points. Generally, the harder the books, appropriate for older students, are worth the most points. Students in graders three though eight will be expected to read a number of books worth a predetermined number of points each quarter in order to meet success. Allowing students to choose their own books enhances their ownership and enjoyment of the program. This printout at the end of the quarter lists the reading level of the books upon which the student test, so parents will know on what level their child is reading. Independent reading should be encouraged at home as well as at school. The accelerated Reader list is available at the Barberton Public Library, as well as at the Norton and Kenmore branches of the Akron-Summit County Public Library.
